The Safe Drinking Water Act
Under the Safe Drinking Water Act, the EPA can allow states to set minimum standards to protect underground drinking water from contamination due to injection fluids. At this time, EPA testing shows that the chemicals used in the hydraulic fracturing process are trace, and therefore safe.

Naturally, land owners and private well owners voice concern as the "fracking" process increases. Areas with dense populations show heightened concern. The Utica Shale is in Eastern Ohio, so the population is denser than the Bakken and some Texas shale formations. More education will dispel fears about "fracking" and the process today.

Horizontal Drilling is Safer
Although hydraulic fracturing is a relatively old method of drilling for gas, the horizontal drilling method is a new addition. This is a safer way to drill because it requires less well heads. That means fewer drilling footprints. In more populated areas, horizontal drilling is ideal.

The Utica Shale shows promise as a large natural gas resource. This formation is a few thousand feet below the better known Marcellus Shale formation. Experts are hopeful that the Utica reserves are as profitable as Marcellus. Millions of dollars boosted the area economy in the Marcellus.  Although money isn’t a cure for tainted drinking water, the energy companies are still tasked with educating the public.

The tedious process of safeguarding the drilling hole and surrounding bedrock works to reduce contamination. Workers line the drill shaft with concrete. As mud, rocks and other debris come out of the hole, it fills a plastic lined pond. Non-toxic waste goes to landfills.

The high pressure fluid that flows down the hole is mostly water mixed with sand and chemicals. The sand holds the fractures, caused by the fluid’s pressure, open so that gas can escape. The chemicals in the fluid cause public concern. The EPA will continue to check the process for safety, and updated regulations should happen in 2012.

At this time, there is no scientific evidence to call for concern about drinking water from deep well reserves. The positive aspects are much greater. Those include huge boosts to local and state economies and the minimized well footprints due to horizontal drilling.
